The following is meant to dispel common myths about laser hair removal:

Laser hair removal is not permanent

The FDA approved three lasers, as of June, 2000, as offering "Permanent Hair Reduction". The FDA used the term "reduction" instead of "removal" because current laser technology does not remove the hair follicle; it simply disables it from producing any more hair. The FDA defined reduction as the long term, steady reduction in the amount of actively growing hairs. We have found through years of experience that with multiple treatments (between 4 and 6 for most people), we can reasonably expect a 90 to 95% reduction in the amount of hair. Of course, there are certain medical and hormonal conditions that may warrant additional treatments.

Laser hair removal is actually not very painful

It is true that every laser hair removal system has level of discomfort associated with it. This is due to the heat generated by the laser, which most patients describe as being similar to a gentle pinch. Most lasers greatly minimize this discomfort by utilizing a cooling spray that sprays a measured amount of cryogen (a cooling agent) on the skin milliseconds before each laser pulse. This not only protects the skin from thermal injury, it also temporarily numbs it, thereby making the treatments more comfortable. Of course, for individuals who are more sensitive, there is a numbing cream that can be applied to the skin prior to treatment, which alleviates most, if not all, of the discomfort.

Laser hair removal is effective more on light skinned individuals

The perfect candidate for any laser hair removal system is light skin, with dark hair. This is because the laser’s energy is attracted to the melanin in the hair follicle. With darker skin, there is more melanin in the surrounding tissues, next to the hair follicle, that "steals" some of the lasers energy. In spite of this, our advanced hair removal laser can still safely and effectively treat most skin types and colors. However, additional sessions may be needed for darker skin individuals to attain the desired results.

Laser hair removal is not effective for blonde, gray, white, or red hair.

Because there is little to no melanin in the hair follicle of blonde, gray, and white hair, there is nothing for the melanin to be attracted to. Therefore, effective laser treatment on these lighter hair colors has been difficult, if not impossible. However, there has been a recent medical breakthrough in this field, which involves the use of a topical skin spray called Meladyne. This unique product safely delivers melanin to the hair follicle, without discoloring the surrounding skin, and therefore makes it very possible to treat lighter hair colors. Meladyne is available without a prescription, and be purchased directly from our offices. We are one of the only centers in this area to offer Meladyne to our patients.
